Murano Glass Creations
Murano glass has been a famous product of the Venetian island of Murano for over eight hundred years. It is located off the shores of Venice, Italy. The art of making Murano glass is complex and the process used to make this beautiful glass is called lampworking. The glass makers use tongs or pliers to hand mold the molten glass, a blowing pipe, iron rods to which they fasten the objects after blowing, glass- master's work benches, and large glass cutting clippers. Then they add the colors they decide would be best for that particular creation. Aquamarine is created through the use of copper and cobalt compounds. Ruby red uses a gold solution as a colouring agent to make the brillant colors.

Murano Blue Glass Sailboat
This sailboat is blue with clear sails. What a gorgeous piece!
Murano glass was first born on the Venetian island of Murano over eight hundred years ago. What was once an art form exclusive to royalty and hierarchy has long since evolved into a wide variety of art, jewelry, and decor collected throughout the world. The process used to create this unique art form is called lampworking. The glass, made from silica, becomes liquid at high temperatures allowing the skilled glassmaster to shape the material. Techniques employed by Murano glassmakers include filigree, incalmo, engraving, lattimo, ribbed glass, and submersion. Inclusion of materials such as aquamarine, gold, copper, cobalt, and ruby allow glassmakers to create an art piece rich in color and craft. |
